Flag burning went another round with congress again, being narrowly defeated…meaning you can still burn the flag.
Patriotism amuses me. People walk around wearing flags proclaiming that they love this country and anyone that doesn’t can get the hell out. Screaming that burning the flag is such a veil transgression only public hanging can atone the sin. If you don’t vote you must be a communist, MTV’s “Vote or die” campaign was humorous to say the least. Alot of people consider themselves patriotic, but the message they are spreading is so far from the fundamentals the country was founded on that in their very proclamation they are being decidedly unpatriotic….
Sit back for a min and think about what was going on or just happened at the time the constitution, bill of rights and declaration of independence were drafted. Such things were created to define governmentâ??s controls….they were built to make sure that the public had the right to speak out against the government, protect themselves from over zealous governmental prosecution and make sure the public could stay armed incase they needed to rise up against the government again. Burning the flag is speaking out against the government, plain and simple that’s all it is. People do it for the media attention and shock factor they get from the ignorant masses. True patriots should be utterly outraged that the government would attempt to outlaw a form of protest. I hate to throw out the free speech argument simply because it’s a misnomer and does not exist, but flag burning needs to be protected under our freedom to protest. As long as it’s not a 90 foot flag in the middle of a dry field in an attempt to start a million acre grass fire…there’s really nothing wrong with it. We need to be concerned about them banning this because of what it could lead to…what they might ban next after this one simple form of protest. The adage about the inch and mile seems applicable in this case.
Love it or leave it….that phrase alone is so discussing. It demonstrates the “sheep” mentality that so many people are resigned to. You don’t have to be content with the government, and you shouldn’t be. If you vote, you have an opportunity to work within the system in place to try to change it….should voting be counted as discontent with the government? If you shouldn’t burn the flag..something that’s legal and should be…should you note vote and whoever is in should make our decisions on successors? It seems to me like it’s the same thing. “Soldiers died so you could vote!” No they didn’t, they didn’t sacrifice their life so we as a people should have to go out and vote now. They sacrificed so we had -choice-. We can choose to vote, we can choose to protest….we can choose to scratch our asses in public…
People protesting the soldiers bugs the hell outta me though. They are free to do so and their statements are in my opinion wrong…but they need to be free to say them. So many people fail to recognize that it’s possible to respect and recognize the bravery of those that serve and still not believe in the underlying conflict. The young men and women that go over the hill firing have no say in which conflicts they fight and which they won’t. They signed up for a reason, agreed to follow what orders they are given, and do so. They fight for the weak and are a barrier between us and the barbarians at the gate. I’m awfully happy there are people that do serve, and I support what they do…but I also thing that the government handles things incorrectly and fights in the wrong conflicts. I respect the office of the presidency but I’d also like to see that dipshit currently holding it to be ousted.
I don’t vote for president and as long as the Electoral College is in place I never will. It’s outdated and unnecessary at this point. I don’t vote for much of anything…I came close here when they were looking at a cigarette ban locally, but that could potentially be shot down by 1 person after everyone voted anyhow…so I really didn’t see where it was much of a vote.
