squirrel barfed for a min there…and I’m not entirely sure why. Had to install and reconfigure a few packages. Seems to work now.

—-edit

still has some errors but does work. I’ll look at it when I have time, probably not till friday nite or this weekend.

—edit x2

or I’ll just do it now while I’m waiting to see if anyone can’t login this morning. We’re migrating users to a new domain, so in the mornings for a couple hours I’m chained to my desk while most people come to work and login for the first time.

/me edits his resume

…debugs php in his spare time…

Years ago, all this computer shit seemed so mysterious and useless. I remember when I lived with my cousin for a year we discussed getting a computer but couldn’t see the point of another thing sitting around gathering dust. Now I’ve got 4 or so in the apartment and would like a couple more. Formatting a disk was an alien concept, and the guys at school that brought up a dos window to do it most certainly were computer nerds. Now, I spend so much time working at the command line that a mouse seems like a cumbersome tool. I try to navigate around in dos and find myself slipping into linux commands, getting pissed because they don’t work. “dir” instead of “ls” wtf! I have to type a drive letter… jesus…WHY THE HELL DOESN’T TAB COMPLETE WORK!!!!

Every user that fancies themselves an aspiring computer nerd should setup a linux box…no GUI, just a straight command line headless linux box. It lets you see all the shit that windows goes to great lengths to hide from the users. I’m not a programmer, but I’m not afraid of editing some shit. I can read debug output and find where the error is…why the hell it’s causing an error is still over my head though. Instead of just clicking on an install file and waiting…you actually get to configure stuff for your box…compile it and go. Sounds kind of dorky but it’s interesting never the less.

BTW! the squirrel error…not exactly my fault per se. I upgraded some stuff here, and somewhere in there I stumbled across the right combination of updated packages that exposed a bug in squirrel. I had to patch one of the squirrel php’s to fix the error.

completed

The switch to Idea One has been completed. Initial speed tests show that I didn’t gain jack shit by switching over…I’m a little disappointed in that, but we’ll give it a week to condition then see what it looks like. I’ll do my best to hold off on various activities that can suck down the bandwidth.

I am bouncing through Idea One’s SMTP server for outgoing mail sent through squirrel. I would advise you to use a mail client with your own outgoing server…just because, but if you do use squirrel LMK if anyone has any issues with spam filters eating messages sent by you.

I changed the host name on the server, just because I must not have been paying attention when I was setting it up here last time. Valhalla is the new host name if it makes any difference to you, it shouldn’t effect anything. I’m hoping to one day setup a new box and I’ll probably keep this one online for testing and Misc activities, so changing the host name from what it was makes sence. I rebooted the machine and didn’t see any errors.

The DSL went offline around 9 this morning I believe it was and should have been fully back up by 5 this afternoon. Anything sent to your account between those hours were cached on bluevulpine and are starting to filter through…I’ve gotten a few myself here.

I had to correct the time on the damn machine after this last reboot…one day I’ll either get a new cmos battery for that box or new board all together.

If you notice any problems, LMK and I’ll pretend to care ;)

grrrr

Little recap:

September 10, 2006

The bears got exactly what they needed out of this game, one hell of a confidence builder for their shaky offense and practice for their defense. I still maintain they should trade Grossman and start Greise…but for now he is the QB on that club.

September 24, 2006

grossman really showed his inexperience. If anyone thought this was a solid performance for grossman they are clearly on crack. He gained valuable experience and with any luck will learn from this and handle it better next time. His performance was pathetic anytime they put pressure on him but he managed to sqeek by.

October 16, 2006

The bear offence was pathetic this nite…check that, Grossman was pathetic this nite. I said it the beginning of the year and I will maintain it even through the playoffs…Grossman should be benched in favor of Griese.

November 5, 2006

What is it going to take to replace grossman. Since the beginning of the season I have believed that once healthy he should be traded in favor the best draft pick possible and Greise should be the starter.

November 6, 2006

bad news indeed. It sounds like such a wussy injury…but I had turf toe on and off in high school…it’s a nagging thing that is really uncomfortable. It really sucks that it happens this time of the year…and more so that it happened in a part of Sunday’s game that should have seen the absents of starting personelle. Two tuff games coming up and …Giants, Jets and New England. Too bad it didn’t take out grossman.

I want to make sure it’s known that I’ve been consistant over the year. If this last game against the Pat’s didn’t show it as clearly as possible…I dunno what it’s going to take. The bears cannot move forward in the playoffs with grossman at qb…in his current form. Maybe given time he will turn into a solid player, he definitly has a cannon…but we need something right now. The defence gave him the ball back 5 fucking times, not to mention a key…key ABSOLUTE KEY turnover in the last 2 min to allow the opportunity for victory. The running game was poor the first half, but picked up by leaps and bounds the 2nd. The receivers run patterns and catch as well as anyone in the league, and the defence…for christ sake, they handed him the ball 5 freekin times. These turnovers are not “lucky breaks” they are generated turn overs by the defence. Knocking the ball loose interceptions and hard tooth jarring hits are all parts of the whole that makes this D the best in the league.

Disgusting to say the least.

pandemonium

Posted by Grand Poobah On November - 24 - 2006

That’s really the only way to describe this morning…pure pandemonium.

The child and I decided yesterday that we are going to get up before dawn (430) and head to sears and best buy. On the surface this sounded like a good idea. I went last year around 7 or so and it wasn’t too bad. I had hoped to pick up a drill bit “set” from sears, possibly a Bluetooth headset and blank DVDâ??s from best buy…then come home.

Well, 430 rolls around and both the kid and I get outta bed pretty darn good. She’s ready to go in a matter of minuets and we are off. Now the first 200 in sears get those 10 dollar gift cards…and wasn’t sure we’d make it for that, but I thought we just might have a chance. Sears opens at 5, we’ll get there about 1/4 and be sitting pretty good…. We round the corner and drive by best buy…suddenly it dawns on me this wasn’t a very intelligent thing to do. The line for best buy is wrapped around the god damn store. I figured my chances for the head set and DVDâ??s were out the window, but we press on to sears.

Once we arrive at sears I was pretty sure our chances of getting a gift card were gone as well. We were around person # 1354 I would guess. The child and I were both longing for our pillows at this point, but we press on! We get into the store relatively painlessly, and begin our search for these bits. We locate them without too much trouble and decide to take a little look around for other items. I come across a different set of bits that was also on sale, looked slightly more appealing to me and were cheaper…I decided to go with those. We make our way to a check out stand. Now I’m not sure where they find these speed demons to do the checking out, but the master of our destiny this day was surely there with Noah when she started to rain just a titch. He was slow…slow slooooooooowwwwwwwww. It was the shortest line I could find, but much as the ladies have been told for years, size doesn’t always matter. After explaining to him how a credit card works, that there was no reason to fear the computer in front of him and that FDR wasn’t president anymore, we are out of sears.

We make our way to the truck, and then hike over to best buy. The youngling and I walk into the store….then promptly walk out. The check out line was wrapped litterally around the god damn store. We couldn’t break through the line to see merchandise…much less stand in it to check out.

Sammy was pretty good through this ordeal, so I decided to take her to McDonalds for breakfast. We both grab some grease and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of what a store is suppose to be like at 6 in the damn morning. There were maybe 8 people in there counting employees. We then trek home.

Now, as I’m sitting there talking to Sara about the day…I explain to her what I bought and what we did. Now, the price of the bits was 10 bucks…McD ran me 10 bucks….and I lost quite a bit of sleep and time waiting on shit this morning. Regular price of the bits you ask? 20 bucks. I also told her about missing out on the headset and stuff at best buy….she mentions it might be available online…sure enough, it was but is now sold out.

Ahhh but the experience….surely that’s priceless.
