Commercial post!

Posted by Grand Poobah On November - 30 - 2009

My first “commercial” post! It’s not something I’m getting paid for, but the dude said I can post a link to my website or blog in the posts.  My idea is to do some posts on there and judge the “followers”, then start putting a link to technohillbilly.com at the ends of the posts and maybe drum up some business.  I don’t have visions of going global, but a couple of bucks here and there would be nice.

Weis out

Posted by Grand Poobah On November - 30 - 2009

Notre Dame is fired Weis. This was expected at the end of last season and all but a given going into the last week of this season. I wonder if he’ll return to the NFL or try his hand at another college program. This guy was really hyped up when he was hired by Notre Dame, I can’t imagine his stock is worth a shit right now.

Content Filtering

Posted by Grand Poobah On November - 30 - 2009

I’ve setup the smoothwall firewall and it works just jim dandy.  I’ve been mucking around with the content filtering and that isn’t so dandy.  It seems that even for a home situation a 500/256 machine just doesn’t have the horse power to scan the websites as they are being browsed.  It could also be a problem with clamav and disk speed.  Clamav caches shit, so disk read speed becomes very important.  There is an option in /etc/dansguardian/dansguardian.conf to disable virus scanning.  I have disabled that this morning and rebooted the router, but I’ll have to wait till I’m home to check it out.  The idea of being able to scan for viruses is kinda nice, but it looks like it’s going to take a larger investment than I want to make for it to work properly.

I didn’t want to spend any money on the first build in case I didn’t find a good use for it or it didn’t perform decently.  After looking over craig’s list it seems like a guy can get a decent box for around 100-200 bucks.  If the clamav adjustment doesn’t work, I’ll probably look at picking one up.

Derek Jeter

Posted by Grand Poobah On November - 30 - 2009

Derek Jeter has been named Sports Illustrated’s sportsman of the year.  I’m not a huge baseball fan, and don’t see much news outside of what’s on sport’s center and si.com, but Jeter seems like a pretty model athlete publicly.  He could be killing puppies behind closed doors, but I haven’t seen too many negative articles about him, haven’t seen his name all over the tabloids…and haven’t heard his name in conjunction with steroids at all.  Outside of a few comments about how over rated he is (I have no idea) I’ve seen nothing negative about him at all.

Jeter is what I’d like to see out of more “star” athletes.  Put up solid numbers, be quiet in public and don’t pull too much attention to yourself.  It amazes me how some star athletes act like jackasses then bitch and moan when their actions put them in the public eye.
