They are only rumors at this point, but there are rumblings of Shanahan taking over the Redskins. IMO this means the bears will be sticking with Lovie for the next year at least. If you think about the 10mil they would have owed him, the odds seem likely they would stay with him…now if you figure they can’t get the coach that Jay Cutler had success with, I expect some assistance coaches and coordinators to get fired but Lovie and Angelo to stay. I am going on wax saying that if the Bears do not have a shot at Shanahan they do not hire a new head coach. I think there is a 50/50 shot they hire Charlie Weis after the season.
Damn it anyway!
Shanahan may be taking over Washington Redskins
The word on the street is that former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan will soon be roaming the sidelines and hallways of the Washington Redskins, according to the Denver Post. It is believed that Shanahan will soon be named the head coach of the Redskins for 2010.
It’s not a done deal but Shanahan and brand-spanking-new Redskins general manager Bruce Allen, who takes over for the unemployed-as-of-Wednesday Vinnie Cerrato, are supposedly old pals who would like to do this thing together. When Shanahan was talking to the Buffalo Bills last month about a job there, he reportedly said that he and Allen were a “package deal.”
Now the ‘Skins just need to hope Shanahan can do what he did for the Broncos, leading them to back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1997 and 1998.
Allen, who was GM of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for five years, was originally thought to be a proponent of bringing in Jon Gruden, who he worked with down in Florida. But it appears that the Allen/Shanahan bond is strong. Perhaps they’ve shared a few late-night beers talking about a crazy boss they both once had at different points in their careers: Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.
