What are the yankees going to do about Jeter? At the time they signed him it seemed like they were caving to fan pressure, but I wonder what the repercussions would have been had they let him walk. There would have probably been some kick back in the club house, maybe they would have floundered a little bit until a new leader and team unity developed…but would that have hurt them more overall than actually leaving Jeter in the lineup? I have been hearing some talk about it on sportscenter, and read a little about it…but it seems like Jeter must be an awfully arrogant or prideful guy. I wonder if he can actually accept the fact that he is hurting the team. I read something that he asked for 6 years and 150mil for this contract. Obviously there is nothing wrong with asking…but everyone knew he wasn’t worth that kind of money. Age slowing you down is a constant throughout sports and even more so in baseball it can be measured via raw data. The numbers prove time and time again that after a player hits X age his performance is going to decrease by (range). There is simply no disputing it. It’s going to take some kind of superman (or really good undetectable drugs) to overcome this situation.
Will Jeter rebound? will he step down? who knows. If he voluntarily dropped down in the order that would be pretty huge, and if he retired leaving an incredible amount of money on the table…he would be some kind of incredible sportsman. I’d like to see him bounce back. As a fan of sports, I like Jeter…I like a guy that went out to perform, got paid for it and you didn’t really hear anything about him in the news. He could be stepping on puppies behind closed doors and we have no idea. I like not knowing anything about his personal life. If he can’t bounce back, I’d like to see him step down voluntarily, but I doubt that will happen. I was a Favre fan too until his last year in green bay. I hated the way both him and green bay handled things. If they were done with him..fine, and I get that “it’s business” but I’d think the icon had earned the chance to go where he wanted. Cut him and be done. In baseball you can’t do that. The team is stuck with his contract unless he retires. The only thing they can do is move him down the rotation or…sit…him….
